Tafat was knotted in the Middle Atlas in a tradition where colour is not chosen for harmony but for feeling. The palette here is everything at once: deep crimson and cream, cobalt blue and cerulean, hot pink and forest green, orange and sage, black and lilac. There is no dominant tone. The entire surface competes and every part of it wins. The composition is divided into irregular colour fields, each one carrying its own secondary motifs, diamonds within diamonds, linear marks, arrow forms, eye shapes, and jagged silhouettes. The borders are woven in alternating cobalt and cream bands. The fringe is long and white. This is not a rug that waits to be noticed.

Why this rug+

The colour range is exceptional even by Boujaad standards. Most pieces in this tradition work within a warm palette. Tafat goes further, pulling in cobalt, cerulean, forest green, and hot pink alongside the crimson and orange. The result is a surface that reads differently under every light condition.

The composition is built from irregular fields rather than a repeating grid. Each section has its own internal logic and its own motifs. The eye moves through the piece rather than scanning it, which is a quality that distinguishes a weaver working freely from one following a pattern.

The secondary motifs inside each field, diamonds, arrows, eye forms, linear marks, are placed with precision. The overall composition is expressive. The individual marks are controlled. That combination is what makes a Boujaad worth keeping.

At 156 x 97 cm it is a genuine area rug. Large enough to anchor a seating group or define a bedroom floor. Not so large that it dominates a smaller space.
How this sits in a room+

In natural light

In daylight the cobalt and cerulean pop against the cream and the crimson fields hold weight and depth. Hot pink reads as a sharp accent. In evening or warm artificial light the cool tones soften and the oranges and reds intensify. The rug changes character depending on the hour, which is part of what makes living with it worthwhile.

Wall colours it suits

Neutral walls, off-white to warm greige, let the rug carry the colour in the room without competition. Against near-black or deep navy the cream and cobalt lift clearly and the piece takes on a gallery quality. Avoid walls with strong colour of their own. This rug does not share the space easily.

Floor and furniture

Works best with simple, low-profile furniture in natural materials: wood, linen, undyed cotton, raw leather. Keep the surrounding pieces quiet. The rug is the object in the room. Everything else should support it.

Care instructions+
Vacuum regularly
Low suction, against the pile. Avoid the fringes with the nozzle.
Brush once or twice a year
Keeps the wool fibres alive and the texture looking its best.
Treat stains quickly
Blot gently with warm water and a little Woolite. Never rub.
Let it breathe
Never leave it folded for long. Wool needs air to stay in good shape.
Natural freshening tip
A light mist of water, bicarbonate of soda, and a few drops of mint essential oil refreshes the rug between cleans and acts as a natural insect repellent in spring and summer.
