The ivory base is not empty. It is covered from edge to edge in scattered dots, black and cobalt blue, like a field of marks that never stops. Over that, bold black geometric lines draw large diamond and zigzag forms across the surface. Two crimson lines cut diagonally through the composition. At the centre, a dark elongated medallion, nearly black, is filled with cobalt blue horizontal stripes and edged in crimson. The pile is very thick. The scale of the pattern makes the rug feel larger than its 139 x 107 cm. There is a lot happening here, and none of it is accidental.

Why this rug+

The dot field covering the entire ivory base is extremely unusual in Beni Ourain weaving. Most pieces in this tradition leave the ground clean. Filling it with scattered black and cobalt marks changes the visual weight of everything above it.

The crimson diagonal lines are the unexpected element. Against the ivory and black geometry they read as a deliberate interruption, like something added at the last moment that turns out to be exactly right.

The central medallion, black with cobalt blue stripes, sits at the exact visual centre and holds the whole composition together. Remove it and the rug would lose its anchor.

I chose this one because the dot ground is something I had not seen in this form before. The artisan built a second composition under the main one. That is the kind of decision that takes confidence.
How this sits in a room+

In natural light

In daylight the cobalt blue dots read clearly against the ivory base and the crimson lines are vivid. In evening light under warm bulbs the ivory softens, the black geometry becomes more dominant, and the blue dots recede slightly into the field. The rug changes register depending on the light and time of day.

Wall colours it suits

Off-white and warm linen extend the ivory base naturally. Against deep navy or near-black walls the ivory field lifts and the cobalt and crimson read with full intensity. Avoid warm terracotta or orange walls which will compete with the crimson accent lines.

Floor and furniture

Works on wood, stone, and concrete floors equally well. The ivory base adapts to any surface. Keep furniture plain and uncompeting: raw linen, natural wood, undyed cotton. The composition on this rug is dense and rewards a quiet surround.

Care instructions+
Vacuum regularly
Low suction, against the pile. Avoid the fringes with the nozzle.
Brush once or twice a year
Keeps the wool fibres alive and the texture looking its best.
Treat stains quickly
Blot gently with warm water and a little Woolite. Never rub.
Let it breathe
Never leave it folded for long. Wool needs air to stay in good shape.
Natural freshening tip
A light mist of water, bicarbonate of soda, and a few drops of mint essential oil refreshes the rug between cleans and acts as a natural insect repellent in spring and summer.
