An expanse of undyed cream wool, almost empty, marked with a handful of black signs: a zigzag falling from the top left, ladder and pole forms rising through the middle, a lozenge, scattered dots and dashes, and a row of short strokes walking along the base like notation. It reads like a page of music or a poem written in a script only the weaver knew, which is what Izlan means: songs. Of all the designs in the collection this is the most minimal, and the most quietly powerful.

Sizes and lead time
Woven to order. The photos show the reference piece woven by the cooperative. Choose your size and fringe finish and the same design is knotted for you: count 6 to 8 weeks to your door. Hand-knotting means your rug will carry its own small variations from the photo. That is part of every handmade piece.
Why this rug
Almost-empty composition in the oldest Beni Ourain spirit: undyed wool, charcoal marks, nothing else.
The marks sit mostly in the lower half, so the rug calms a room rather than filling it.
Undyed cream wool shows the natural variation of the fleece, from chalk to warm ivory.
I chose this design for modern interiors: it belongs equally under a Scandinavian sofa and on a terracotta floor.
How this sits in a room
In natural light
This rug is about texture more than pattern. Side light in the morning and evening brings the relief of the knots alive; at midday it reads as a soft cream field.
Wall colours it suits
Any warm neutral works. Against charcoal or deep olive walls the cream field glows and the black marks disappear and reappear as you move.
Floor and furniture
The classic choice under a sofa or bed. Works with every floor; the quieter the furniture, the better the marks read.
Care instructions
Vacuum regularly
Low suction, against the pile. Avoid the fringes with the nozzle.
Brush once or twice a year
Keeps the wool fibres alive and the texture looking its best.
Treat stains quickly
Blot gently with warm water and a little Woolite. Never rub.
Let it breathe
Never leave it folded for long. Wool needs air to stay in good shape.
Natural freshening tip
A light mist of water, bicarbonate of soda, and a few drops of mint essential oil refreshes the rug between cleans and acts as a natural insect repellent in spring and summer.
