An ivory cream field bordered by black zigzag lines running the full length of both sides. Between them, the surface is covered in a full vocabulary of Amazigh symbols: a nested diamond at the centre outlined in red and filled with teal and black, a rosette medallion below it in teal and pink, arrow forms pointing upward at the top and base, cross and anchor forms in black, X shapes in pink and olive, ladder forms in teal, bracket marks, chevrons in orange, and scattered motifs throughout in burgundy, navy and grey. The composition is not decorative. It is a record. Every mark was placed on purpose by someone who knew what each one meant.

Sizes and lead time

The photographed piece is the size marked Ready to ship and ships from Belgium within 2 to 3 working days. Every other size is woven to order in the same design by the cooperative: count 6 to 8 weeks to your door. Hand-knotting means your rug will carry its own small variations from the photo. That is part of every handmade piece.

Why this rug+

The black zigzag border running both edges is a classic Amazigh protective motif. It frames the composition and gives the field a contained, intentional quality that most rugs of this type lack.

The symbol density is unusually high. Most Azilal rugs use a few repeated motifs. This one carries at least a dozen distinct forms, each placed in its own space. It rewards looking at properly.

The ivory base keeps the composition clear and readable. The colours are vivid but the cream ground gives every mark room to breathe.

I chose this one because of the central diamond. The way the red outline, teal fill and black centre sit together is something the artisan decided on her own. That kind of colour confidence is what I look for.

How this sits in a room+

In natural light

In daylight the ivory base glows and the teal and red marks read with full clarity. In evening light the black zigzag border comes forward and the composition becomes more graphic and intimate. The multicolour palette means this rug shifts register depending on the time of day.

Wall colours it suits

Off-white and warm linen let the symbols read clearly without competing. Against deep navy or near-black walls the ivory field lifts and the multicolour marks come forward. Avoid cool greys which will drain the warmth from the ivory base.

Floor and furniture

Works on warm wood floors, stone, or concrete equally well. The ivory base adapts to any surface. Keep furniture simple and uncluttered: this rug carries the decorative weight in the room and does not need competition from busy patterns or strong colours nearby.

Keeps the wool fibres alive and the texture looking its best.

Treat stains quickly

Blot gently with warm water and a little Woolite. Never rub.

Never leave it folded for long. Wool needs air to stay in good shape.

Natural freshening tip

A light mist of water, bicarbonate of soda, and a few drops of mint essential oil refreshes the rug between cleans and acts as a natural insect repellent in spring and summer.
