A zellige coffee table is not a quiet object. Every tile was cut by hand in Salé, the glaze shifts from one firing to the next, and the top catches light differently at nine in the morning and nine at night. Here is how we place ours, and what we tell customers who ask.
Start with the floor, not the sofa
The table sits low, forty centimetres, so the floor is its real background. Céladon and cream designs like Atay and Dama read best on bare oak, pale tiles or a flat-woven rug. Warmer palettes, the sand cubes of Sukar or the sage and terracotta stars of Njoum, come alive on darker wood and against leather. If your rug already carries a pattern, choose a calm field such as Jnan and let the rug do the talking.
Size it to the sofa, then go one step bigger
The rule we use: the table should be about two thirds the length of the sofa, with 40 to 45 cm of walking space around it. For a standard two-seater that means 100 x 55 or 100 x 60; for a three-seater, 110 or 120 cm long. When in doubt, go bigger. A zellige top is a composition, and the patterns settle into their rhythm on the larger sizes. Every design in the coffee-table collection is made in fifteen sizes, so you are never rounding to the nearest box.
Let it be the one bright thing
A mosaic top does the work of a piece of art. Around it, keep the palette simple: a neutral sofa, linen, one plant, a brass or black lamp. Designs with strong colour, Sala and Taj especially, want a room that is otherwise restrained. If you like a busier room, Houta's cream fish scales with a single green border give texture without adding a colour.
Living with it
Zellige and cement do not mind a hot teapot, a wet glass or a child's toy car. Wipe with a damp cloth; skip abrasive cleaners. The folding iron base means the table travels flat and can move to a covered terrace for the summer. Because each top is cut to order, we photograph yours before it leaves the workshop, so you see exactly what is coming.
