How to Style a Moroccan Zellige Table in Your Home

Mint green zellige mosaic coffee table styled in a living room

A Moroccan zellige table is not really furniture in the usual sense. It is a mosaic of glazed tiles, each one cut by hand with a sharp hammer by a maâlem, a master artisan, then set into a tabletop that will outlive most of the things around it. The patterns, stars, diamonds and interlocking polygons, carry the visual language of Islamic geometric art.

If you have just brought one home, or you are still deciding, here is how to give it the place it deserves.

Placement

Where a Zellige Table Works Best

Living room
As a coffee table or side table, the mosaic top anchors the whole room without shouting for attention. A 50 or 60 cm top beside a sofa does the most work.
Terrace or garden
Zellige was born in Moroccan courtyards, so it is perfectly at home outdoors. Cover it or bring it in through the freezing months and it will serve you for decades.
Entryway
A small table with a candle or a plant makes a warm first impression, the kind of welcome you find in a riad. A 20 or 30 cm top is enough.
Pairing

What to Pair It With

The cool ceramic surface and precise geometry ask for warm, organic textures around them.

A hand-knotted Amazigh rug. Thick wool underfoot softens the geometry of the tiles. Place one beneath the table to ground the space. Browse our Amazigh Berber rugs.
Linen and cotton. Plain, undyed cushions and throws let the tabletop do the talking.
Natural wood. Olive wood, cedar or walnut next to glazed tile gives that warm Moroccan-Mediterranean feel.
Beldi glassware. A few hand-blown Beldi glasses on the table, and it looks like you have always lived this way.
Colour

Keeping the Palette Simple

Blue and white. White walls, natural linen, a touch of brass or copper. Classic, coastal, Moroccan.
Terracotta and ochre. Warm neutrals, deep greens and woven textures for a desert-inspired palette.
Multicolour. Keep everything around it quiet and let the table be the loudest thing in the room.
Styling

What to Place on It

Less is more. The surface is already rich, so style it with restraint.

  • A single candle or small lantern
  • A low bowl or vase from our Moroccan ceramics
  • A small stack of books with beautiful spines
  • A tray of Beldi glasses, ready for mint tea
Care

Looking After It

Cleaning

Wipe with a soft damp cloth. Mild soap is fine. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which dull the enamel over time. The grout lines can be cleaned with a soft brush.

Outdoors

The tiles are frost-resistant and the cement top handles the seasons well, even in full summer sun. Through heavy rain and the snow season, use a waterproof cover or bring it inside: water that sits and freezes stresses the grout lines, and the iron base lasts longest when it stays dry.

Natural variations

Each tile is hand-cut and hand-placed. Slight irregularities in the grout lines, tile edges and colour depth are normal. They are what make the piece real.
